KGS 2nd XI Hockey v Withington Girls' School

On Wednesday 14 September, the 2nd XI hockey team had their first match of the season in the first round of the Tier 2 U18 Schools' Competition v Withington Girls' School. The girls started slowly, with being a new team, and went 1-0 down within the first 10 minutes of the game. However, the KGS team settled into the match and started to string passes together and create some nice attacking play. KGS had a goal disallowed by Eva Berry just before half time which spurred the team on for what they wanted to achieve. In the last play before half time, a great team goal resulted in Eva putting the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-1 going into half time.

The second half was end to end from both teams, with lots of chances being created but unfortunately none converted. As this was a knock out competition there had to be a result at the end of the day. The game finished 1-1, therefore had to go to penalty strokes. Five of the team stepped forward to take part in a gripping penalty shoot-out. Some great saves from GK Eva Earnshaw and 2 converted strokes from Martha Miller and Captain, Phoebe Caunce, resulted in a win for KGS and through to the next round.

A fantastic start to the season!
