All England U13 Mini Hockey Tournament

U13A Girls Hockey (pictured below)

Kirkham Grammar School U13A team won the first round of the National Mini Hockey competition in the Lancashire round and now advance to the regional finals. With three competitive fixtures to play against LSA, AKS and Westholme, the girls knew they needed to start fast and be on the ball from the first whistle. In their opening fixture against Westholme, they got off to a perfect start with a comprehensive 4-0 win kick started with a goal from Osborne slotted into the bottom corner. Maclean-Bristol added a second goal just before half time with a deflection from a well-worked short corner routine. KGS added two more goals in the second half through Guthrie and Godbold. Dunne, Townsend and So were relatively untroubled in defence but did what little work they had to do without fuss. Townley and McGarry offered good options in attack and rotated well to allow midfielders to rest for the games ahead. The second game was a crucial clash v AKS, with the winners likely to advance to the regional finals. A determined, defensive display saw Musson make several good saves in the first half and Maclean-Bristol clear a deflected shot off the line to leave the half time score at 0-0. The
second half followed a similar pattern with KGS defending with intensity and pressuring the AKS players into mistakes. KGS took the lead after a brilliant one-two left Godbold through on goal to slot calmly into the corner past the AKS keeper. This was followed by some exceptional KGS defence and game management which prevented AKS from threatening the goal, and left the result as a 1-0 win. In their third and final game, KGS took an early lead against LSA with Maclean-Bristol scoring inside the first minute. Three more goals followed in a dominant performance with Guthrie scoring twice and Osborne adding the fourth goal to leave KGS as 4-0 winners and Lancashire Champions overall.

Kirkham Grammar School played their first round match in the Society of Heads Cup against previous finalists from Wales. KGS came out of the blocks fast with some silky ball movement, which resulted in two early goals. Kirkham continued to control the game and the opposition had no answer for the power of Wilsdon, Collinson and the Briggs twins in midfield.Half time whistle came and went and Kirkham continued to assert themselves with Carey, Taylor-Tomlinson and De Klerk showing good composure on the ball.

As the visitors started to tire, the hosts upped their game and scored three more goals through Davies, Taylor-Tomlinson and Craven to finish up deserved winners. Final score 6-0 to KGS. They progress to the regional semi-final where they will host Lincoln Minster School.
