Kirkham Grammar School Second X1 Vs The Queen's Chester U16A team.

After only playing one game together with numerous players missing last week it was great to see the girls gel and improve as the game went on. Again, this week the team faced a very tough and well skilled opposition, but the girls never gave up! The defence battled hard but with a strong opposition KGS were against play for the majority of the game. A gutsy performance from all and the team are looking forward to playing a matched opposition.

A competitive, end to end game for KGS with it being safe to say that the score line did not reflect the girls’ performance. KGS began well and put pressure on for the duration of the first half. However, QC made substitutions which changed the dynamic of the game. QC managed to finish their chances and took the lead although KGS never gave up and fought right up to the last whistle. The girls were unfortunate not to get a goal and will be working on this in training next week.
The U13s were unlucky to draw 1-1 with a well-organised Queen’s Chester side who defended with great determination. KGS dominated much of the first half with some confident defending from Poppy Kearsley, Danielle Merrick, Amy Merrick and Eve Gooderham which created the platform for KGS to dominate the midfield. Ella McDonald was calm and composed on the ball in the centre of midfield and it was this composure that created the KGS goal. Ella linked up well with Bo Madden who slipped a clever pass through to Hattie Madden who calmly pushed the ball past the Queen’s goalkeeper to make it 1-0 to KGS. The score remained the same at half time, despite plenty of KGS attacking pressure and chances for both Madden’s and Arabella Bowker. The KGS girls needed to play with greater width and use the space in the wide areas of the pitch to break down the Queen’s defence.
In the second half, Queen’s equalised following a good attack down the right wing and goalkeeper Darcy Clough was unfortunate not to keep out the lifted shot. In response, the KGS girls pushed hard for the second goal but ultimately were unable to force their way through the Queen’s defence despite a series of short corners and near misses. All the girls involved showed great passion and determination; a few tactical elements of 11-a-side hockey to work on as the girls continue to get used to a new format of the game.
