At lunchtime today, our Sixth Form Summer Lectures took place. Overseen by Head of Geography, Mr Whittle, who had asked any Sixth Former pupils to let him know if they wanted to deliver a public talk about a topic of their choice, our Kirkham Grammar School Lower Sixth Form pupils took centre stage.

The courage, strength of character and intellectual curiosity of today's nine speakers should therefore not be underestimated. Speaking in public is never a straightforward experience, and all nine pupils had to research a topic of their choice and deliver ‘a talk of no more than ten minutes in length that would be academic in nature, yet accessible to the audience’; in reality not necessarily a simple brief.

Without a doubt all nine speakers rose to the challenge and it was fantastic to see the outcome: nine superb talks, varied in nature, yet each one clearly teaching the audience something new, with impressive academic robustness and a sense of humour. The Old Hall provided the perfect backdrop to the event, and the lectures were enjoyed by an audience of fellow Sixth Form students and staff.

For the KGS pupils, personal pride and a genuine sense of achievement, in addition to personal statements are now very much fulfilled! But beyond this, these KGS Sixth Form pupils have continued to support and strengthen the sense of learning and intellectual rigour within the school, and they have taken their interests and conveyed them to a wider audience.

‘Enter in order to profit’ - very well done to you all!
