KGS U15Bs v Austin Friars U15s

The Kirkham U15Bs travelled to Austin Friars and completed an impressive 45-22 victory. Straight from kick-off, KGS found themselves on the back foot of the powerful Cumbrian team, with Austin Friars opening the scoring. The maroons didn’t back down after their initial charge and they went to add a further 2 score putting the KGS team 17-0 down in the first 15 minutes.

Once the Kirkham team had realised that they were 3 tries down and that they had a game on their hands they started playing some fantastic rugby, Jorge Zacharias scoring from 30 metres out from a number 8 pickup. Followed by some excellent running by Harry Reay (2) to even the score, Kirkham were able to put a brilliant piece of team play in which resulted in a penalty try on the stroke of half-time (17-24).

Kirkham had the wind behind them in the second half getting them on the front foot from the off. The forwards worked hard in the 22 with pick and goes which stemmed a try for Captain Ioan Condon and then the same concept finished by Henry Whitton (17-38). This did not dishearten the home side who then had a splurge of energy as they attacked back at the Kirkham team. With the home team 10 & 15 making a mess of the blue and whites’ defence, Austin Friars got over the white-wash to make the score 22-38. Captain Ioan Condon again found himself charging the ball over from short range at the final whistle to make the score 22-45. Callum Hill converted 4 out of the 6 conversions.

Wednesday 22 January

U11 boys’ football v Oldham Hulme - AJIS quarter-final

Kirkham started the game very well and were quickly 1-0 with a well taken free kick by Bertie Jones. Kirkham continued to put pressure on Oldham but their defence withstood the pressure. Oldham then started to play well themselves and managed to score two goals before half time.

The second half saw both sides create chances but unfortunately it was Oldham who converted them with two well taken goals.

The final score was 4-1 to Oldham who now progress to the semi-finals.

Saturday 25 January

U11 Indoor Athletics vs Preston Harriers

On Saturday 25 January, Kirkham Grammar Junior School hosted Preston Harriers for an indoor athletics match. This year they competed for the ‘Bob Welfare Memorial Shield'.

Bob Welfare, who sadly passed away in October, was instrumental in promoting athletics across Lancashire and worked tirelessly for Lancashire schools athletics and his beloved club, Preston Harriers.

Saturday’s match comprised of the following field events: team speed bounce, long jump, triple jump, vertical jump and javelin.

Kirkham performed really well in the field and points were level at this stage.

First places were achieved by:

Emily Greenwood in the Javelin

Poppy Pickervance in the Triple Jump

Hermione Edwards in the Long jump

Evan Twose in the Speed Bounce

Individual track events and relays were held after the field events. Preston Harriers proved very strong competitors on the track and eventually pulled clear to win the match. The final scores were Preston Harriers 183 points and Kirkham 115 points.

All Kirkham athletes can be very proud of their performances and it was lovely to see so many parents from both teams supporting the event.

The PE department and athletes would like to thank Miss Cooper and Mr Butterworth for their help during the last 4 matches on Monday nights and Saturday mornings.
