1st Xl v Grammar School at Leeds

Won 1-0

The 1st XI had a terrific first half dominating from start to finish. They passed the ball round superbly showing real composure and strength from the defence through to the forwards. The girls were so strong shutting the opposition down, making the tackle and creating wave after wave of attack. Kirkham were rewarded before half time with a great goal from Dani Merrick.

The second half was a little more open as GSAL stepped up a gear. However, the Kirkham girls showed real determination and strength and were unlucky not to score a few more goals. A great game and a well-deserved 1-0 victory.

2nd XI

Won 1-0

The 2nd XI secured a hard fought 1-0 win against GSAL. KGS dominated the early exchanges and attacked with speed in wide areas. Isabella Harkins posed a constant threat down the left with her skill and direct running whilst Lexie Fraser also threatened through the middle. As the game wore on GSAL grew in confidence but their attacks were repelled by a strong KGS defence – Molly Hodge and Scarlett Turnock both solid in the tackle. KGS took the lead just before half time from a GSAL short corner; after keeping out the initial shot, KGS broke clear and a composed finish from Lexie Fraser gave them a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern with KGS starting strongly but failing to add to their lead. GSAL finished the game in the ascendency but couldn’t break down the KGS, 11 player defensive effort. A tense finish saw Emily Cooper make two good saves to keep GSAL at bay to preserve a 1-0 win.

U14 XI drew 0-0

The Kirkham girls started really well putting pressure on GSAL from the onset. As the game progressed it became an even battle.  It was highly competitive, very physical and end to end with near misses from both teams. A 0-0 result was a fair reflection of the game.

U12

The U12 squads faced tough opposition away at GSAL. The A team were under a lot of pressure during the 1st half conceding three goals. As the match went on, the girls grew in confidence, shutting the ball down quickly and building an attack. Unfortunately, the girls had left it too late to come back and had to take away a heavy loss.

The B team took control from the start and created several chances through on goal. Poppy Carey and Holly Stanbury worked well together with great support from Leoma Gill and Charlotte Fisher. Unfortunately the result didn’t go out way after conceding a goal in the latter stages of the second half.

Rugby

The U16s have enjoyed success this week by qualifying for the Lancashire Cup Final and winning the RGS Newcastle invitational 7’s. On Wednesday, the boys faced Lancaster Royal Grammar School in the semi-final of the county cup and won 45-7. Tries came from Josh Lynch (3), Aaron Pope, Jamie Livermoore, Harry Snape and Tom Hoad. Aaron Pope and Archie Dowds shared the kicking duties.

On Saturday, the U16s made the journey up to the Royal Grammar School Newcastle for their annual 7s’ tournament. Kirkham defeated some of the top rugby playing schools in the North of England on their way to the final which included, Barnard castle (26-12), RGS Newcastle (29-0), St Peter’s York (21-5) and Woodhouse Grove (31-21). Kirkham then beat Sedbergh in the final 19-12. Captain Aaron Pope looked sharp, with Josh Lynch and Tobias Parkinson picking up the bulk of the tries on the day.
