St Edward’s College
Won 23 v 19
Notes :
On a wet day, with a depleted side, the U16s won this game with the final play of the game. For a large proportion of the first half KGS were camped in the St Edward’s half and with one minute to go found themselves 8-0 up through a penalty by Ben Jones and a mauled try from Alex Lo. However, St Edward’s pulled a try back through their winger and the half time score looked much closer at 8-7.

St Edward’s pressurised after half time and was rewarded through a well worked try.
KGS replied straight away through some excellent mauling led by Matthew Ellis, Adam Whalley and debutant flanker, Jonathan Taylor. Through one of these mauls, Ryan Morton cashed over for a try. Ben Jones missed the conversion but converted a penalty to make the score 16-12 with five minutes left.

Basic errors by the team with two minutes left saw St Edward’s convert their pressure into what looked like a match winning score and in order to win the game, the ball had to be kicked dead from the KGS kick off. However from the kick off a superb follow up from the KGS forwards saw the St Edward’s player turned over and KGS attacked through the whole team. After a number of phases of play James Coulthard fed Ryan Morton who crashed over for a match winning try and a New Year semi final against either Manchester Grammar School or Lancaster Grammar School.

U15 XV A

Cowley
Won 35 v 14
Notes :
The U15s travelled to Cowley Long College on Thursday to play the fourth round of the Daily Mail Vase Competition.

The forwards were tremendous right from the whistle. The catch and drive from the line-out was particularly effective. The back row dominated the open play which allowed Sam Hall to cross the line twice in the first half.

The second half saw Cowley coming back with waves and waves of strong runs from the half backs. However KGS continued to defend hard and kept Cowley out until the last quarter.

KGS will face Calday Grange Grammar School in the next round.

Kings Macclesfield
Won 31-0
Notes :
KGS playing for the first time in two weeks started slowly against a well organised Kings team. Gradually the KGS forwards got on top and with fly-half Daniel Bibby in outstanding form a score soon came from second row Matthew Spedding after some clever support play by William Stover. KGS increased the pressure on Kings and eventually Daniel Bibby was able to show his class with an outstanding finish for the second try of the night. Full back Callum Bennett returning after injury ran some excellent lines and also put winger Neil Booysen for KGS’s third try. Bennett also kicked three conversions. Kings defended very well for long periods in the second half, but eventually the pressure told as forwards Jonathan Edwards, James Hesketh and Tom Sanders made big impacts and further tries came from Wazim Riley and Kieran Brookes. Many thanks must be sent to Fylde RUFC for giving KGS the chance to play under lights on such an outstanding pitch.

Birkenhead
U15 Won 56-10
U14 Won 33-5
U13 Won 43-5
Notes :
U15 XV

Won 56-10

This was a well executed victory against quite a strong team and showed the attacking prowess of KGS’s forwards and backs. The score at half-time was 41-5 with tries from Will Fleuriot, Sam Hall (2), Precious Nwaokomah, Adam Galley, Josh Rowlands, Michaelis Papangelis and conversions from Will Roper (3). With the game going to plan the reserves were given a change in the second half. Further tries from Sam Hall, Michaelis Papengelis and Tom Hirst finished off the game to leave KGS comfortable winners.

U14 XV

Won 33-5

KGS struggled to find their strength or cohesion in the first half and Birkenhead very much put the pressure on our defence. In the second half KGS managed to find headway and secure a victory, but despite the score this was a difficult fixture.

Tries: Ben Rhodes-Powers, Matthew Beatty, Luke Woodward and Scott Rudd.
Conversions: Matthew Beatty (4)

U13 XV

Won 43-5

KGS UI3’s produced their best display of the season running in seven tries in the process and playing with excellent continuity and belief. On a firm surface KGS kept the ball alive at every opportunity and regularly carved holes in the Birkenhead defence. The KGS forwards dominated throughout and in particular the front row of Solton, Harvey and Leach proved dominant in both the scrimmage and tight play. Adam Coates was responsible for most of the damage and he helped himself to four tries, the others were scored by Jonathan Chan, Thomas Hunter and Miles Rawlinson.

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby

Won 40-6

Notes :
KGS 1st XV returned to winning ways with a clear win over Merchant Taylors’ who recently had gone several games unbeaten. Despite missing a number of players through injury, including Captain Jonathan Edwards, KGS were always in control. New captain and hooker William Stover led from the front scoring an early try and was well supported by no. 8 Kieran Brookes (2 tries) and second row Charles O’Flaherty (1 try). Merchant’s fought back with two drop-goals, but with fly half Daniel Bibby controlling the game, KGS edged further ahead with some well taken tries by winger James Moncrieff, full-back Thato Lesoro and centre Tommy Banks. A penalty by Bibby and a conversion by Neil Booysen were also added. Considering KGS had a number of boys missing, this was an excellent performance with young back row forwards Chris Travis and Matthew Edgar at the forefront of much of the action.
2nd XV

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Won 51-0
Notes :
KGS bounced back from their disappointment last week to register a comfortable win against a young Merchant Taylors side. KGS had too much power and pace for the Crosby side, which tackled well, but struggled against the strong running and support play of KGS. Strong KGS set pieces provided the platform for many attacks which were maintained with good ball retention in the loose. KGS scored nine tries. The top try scorer was Ashley Jones with four. There were some exceptional performances in the KGS side. Nick Watson was prominate in the pack. Adam Kelsall had a very sound game in the centre and Mark Graham was outstanding on his debut for the 2nd XV at full back.
U16 XV

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Won 40-0
Notes :
After some lessons last week, the team went about putting in an excellent performance. After initially withstanding some pressure, the forwards started to control the opposition and Ben Jones turned the pressure into points by taking a well taken penalty. Further pressure led to a rolling maul and Robert Malings touched down to make the score 8-0. As in previous matches the team then did not punish opposition mistakes and subsequently had to wait just before half time for Jonathan Davies to break from a rolling maul and score. Half time came with the score at 13-0.

After a quiet half time the forwards, led by George Naylor and Ryan Morton set about setting continuous excellent platforms for the backs to attack from and it was only a matter of time before Jonny Taylor crashed over for the first of his two tries. Taylor’s second try was accompanied straight away by Jonathan Davies’ second. Anish Chandreskar scored a try that had been kindly given to him by the opposition centre before Jordon Nelson scored the try of the match, merely from the fact of the excellent team cohesion that had preceded it. With a superb break by Joshua Keay, after an initial burst from Matthew Ellis and Adam Whalley, Jordan was on his inside shoulder to finish off an excellent team performance.

U15 XV A

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Drew 10-10
Notes :
After the disappointment of last Saturday KGS were determined to win and perform well. The forwards won a numerous amount of quick ball and Tom Hurst and Sam Hall created plenty of opportunities to score. However Merchant Taylors capitalised on a KGS error and the half time score was 7-0.

The second half saw KGS forwards continue to dominate set pieces, but were prevented from playing any constructive patterns. Perhaps the last minute of the game was the most exciting. Will Roper managed to put Sam Hall through a gap and would have scored under the post to win the game, but the try was disallowed due to a forward pass.

U15 XV B

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Lost 10-12
Notes :
The U15’s played very well in the first half and were leading by 7 points to 0 at half time after a try from Joe Walsh and a conversion by Nathan Loftus. Merchant’s came back with a converted try, then Nathan Loftus scored from a drop kick after concerted pressure from the KGS forwards. However, in the last minute of the game the home team scored a try and KGS were very unlucky not to win. Their best performance of the season so far shows that the U15’s are developing into a much stronger and committed side.
U14 XV A

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Won 53-7
Notes :
Despite the final result this was not a walkover. Merchant Taylors fought hard in the first half and gave the KGS forwards a wake up call in rucking and mauling, but KGS were better organised and were able to repeatedly exploit gaps in the Mechant Taylors defence. The KGS backs played fast open rugby and were too quick and strong for the opposition.

Tries: Ryan Wilkinson (2), Ben Rhodes Powers (2), Isaac Yeun, Luke Woodward (1), Scott Rudd (1), Matthew Beatty (1). Conversions Matthew Beatty (4)
Men of the match: Ben Rhodes-Powers, S Rudd

U13 XV A

Merchant Taylors’ , Crosby
Lost 0-45
Notes :
KGS struggled against a much bigger Merchant Taylors side who took the initiative from the beginning with a try straight from the kick-off. This set the tone for the first half with KGS conceding five tries in all. To their credit KGS battled back in the second half and out rucked the home side winning some clean ball allowing the KGS backs to run freely. The second half display from KGS was much more encouraging in very cold and foggy conditions.
U12 XV A

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Won 29-17
Notes :
Despite not playing together for about two weeks it did not take the side long to start producing some good rugby. Excellent rucking and good handling meant that KGS dominated the first ten minutes but good MT defence kept the team out. In the tenth minute Josh Powell, who probably had his best game of the season, scored an excellent solo try. However, poor tackling resulted in the MT fly half scoring almost immediately in reply. The KGS team started to dominate and probably should have won by more but they can feel pleased with their performance considering the cold conditions in which the game was played. Try scorers: Oscar Twitchett (2), David East, Conor Wilkinson, Josh Powell. Josh Powell also scored 3 conversions.
U12 XV B

Merchant Taylors’, Crosby
Lost 0-25
Notes :

On the back of some very encouraging performances the U12B team took to the field against a Merchant Taylors side in a rich vein of form. However, the day did not start well with the absence of a number of players and the opposition soon capitalised on some weak play from the side. The whole of the first half saw a very scrappy game with very little in the way of quality rugby on show. The second half did improve, with a number of KGS players finally starting to do the basics right and the forwards in particular started to impose themselves on the game. Jamie Baldwin an McCauley Wells made a number of forward runs and tried to bring the scores level, but the side were unable to break down the opposition pack. This was a disappointing game for this team that have worked hard all season, and they will be looking to put things right next Saturday against Birkenhead.

Sedbergh
Lost 3 - 13
Notes :
KGS suffered their first defeat of the season with a loss at Sedbergh School. KGS were hampered by a number of injuries both full back Callum Bennett and Captain Jonathan Edwards within the first 15 minutes of the game. These setbacks were made even worse as winger Liam Marmion and flanker David Ellis also had to leave the field of play on either side of half time. However KGS battled strongly and held Sedbergh to only a 10-0 lead at half-time. KGS playing with the wind behind, started the second half strongly and soon got back into the game with a Daniel Bibby penalty. Soon afterwards it looked like KGS had drawn equal when Tom Sanders clearly scored from a catch and drive, unfortunately the try was not awarded. KGS piled on the pressure with centre Wazim Riley getting up within inches of the Sedbergh line. Time ultimately ran out for the KGS team but on another day the result could easily have gone the other way, so close was the game. Even though this was a defeat, much credit must be given to the following boys for playing their best game of the season: Kieran Brookes (prop), Matthew Spedding (second row), Josh Woods (replacement) and Vice-Captain William Stover.
2nd XV

Sedbergh
Lost 0 - 24
Notes :
KGS lost their unbeaten record with a 24-0 defeat to Sedbergh. Despite a committed performance KGS struggled to match the speed and power of the Sedbergh team in the first half. KGS had two or three good opportunities to score, but failed to keep possession and maintain momentum at these key points. The strong running by Sedbergh forced KGS onto the back foot and Sedbergh went into the interval with a 17-0 lead.

KGS fought back well in the second half and were unlucky not to break the Sedbergh line on several occasions. The tackling improved and control in the ruck and maul was more evident. Unfortunately, Sedbergh capitalised continually on the mistakes made by KGS and this lead to another try in the closing moments.

Despite the loss there were some good performances and KGS should look forward to the second part of the season with great optimism.

U16 XV

Sedbergh
Lost 5 - 51
Notes :
A depleted squad travelled to Sedbergh to face our toughest fixture of the season. After one minute the side were 7-0 down and the writing seemed on the wall. However, as usual with this group of players their heads did not drop and the response was magnificent with the forwards controlling play for ten minutes before Ryan Morton crashed over for a try. However poor concentration led to Sedbergh scoring straight away from the kick-off and even though we defended commendably through George Naylor, Dexter Eaves and George Mills, we turned around at the break 27-5 down. The team then rallied in the second half and again the forwards dominated but again the Sedbergh backs punished every mistake and four more tries were leaked. The team took many positives out of the game and realistically with a full strength side returning this week, the team will be confident going into the Merchant Taylors’ fixture.
