The department has two specialist physical education teachers (one male, one female). All pupils participate in over three hours of physical education per week during curriculum time. In addition to the time allocated within the curriculum, opportunities are made available at lunchtimes and evenings where pupils can extend their experiences in a wide range of activities.

The sporting opportunities within the curriculum include athletics, basketball, badminton, cross-country, cricket, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, swimming and volleyball. Fixtures are played during the week and at weekends. The school is affiliated to the Association of Junior Independent Schools, which organises various tournaments and championships. The Association has 39 member schools throughout the northwest making a very competitive and well-run organization.

The facilities of the school are excellent comprising of a fully equipped gymnasium, netball court, rugby pitch, athletics track and cricket nets. The school makes use of the senior school's Astroturf pitch, cricket Square and multipurpose hall. The local swimming pool is within walking distance and the school delivers one lesson per week to all junior pupils throughout the year.

All pupils are members of one of four houses (Birley, Colborne, Clifton and Drapers). Inter-house sports competitions are programmed throughout the year in athletics, cricket, cross-country, hockey, netball, rugby, rounders and swimming. The main emphasis is upon participation and over 95% of pupils are involved.

The school, in recent years, has had tremendous success in a number of sports, in particular, the AJIS Hockey Tournment, which we have won twice in the last three years. Last season, the girls recorded a hat trick of victories winning the AJIS Hockey Tournament, the Rossall Budge Sevens and the St Mary's Hall Tournament. The girls finished the season with an excellent 2nd place in the North of England finals held in Durham. The girls have certainly set high standards for all the other sports to aspire to in the future.
