Music at Kirkham Grammar School is taught in small groups with a strong emphasis being placed on practical work.
It is an ideal subject for pupils already actively involved in music making, be they instrumental or vocal soloists, orchestral players or choristers.
THE COURSE
The syllabus followed is that of the Edexcel.
Areas of study are:
1. Practical Work 30%
Pupils prepare for both solo and ensemble performances and aim to achieve a musical standard equivalent to Grade V or higher by the end of the Course.
2. Composition 30%
Two compositions are prepared. Pupils are encouraged to pursue their own particular interests and produce original works in a variety of styles.
3. Listening 40%
The Course followed helps pupils to listen intelligently and to recognise, appreciate and enjoy music of all styles from the sixteenth century to the present day.
WHY MUSIC?
Most pupils taking the subject are probably not intending to pursue a career in music.
For many it is an opportunity to use a hobby they really enjoy to gain a worthwhile certificate at the end of the fifth form. It is a pleasant break from the clearly 'academic' subjects!
For those considering non-specialist teaching in Junior Schools, a musical qualification is obviously invaluable. For the specialist teacher, or for those looking at careers in Performance, Composition or Sound Systems, Music Technology, Music Library work, it is a must.
