Music at Kirkham Grammar School is taught in small groups with a strong emphasis being placed upon practical work.
Pupils are encouraged to develop their own particular interest and skills not only in timetabled periods but also by participating in concerts and other musical activities in and out of school.
THE COURSE
The course consists of six units:
Units 1, 2 and 3 make up the AS qualification.
Units 1 to 6 make up the whole GCE Advanced level qualification.
AS Units
Unit 1 Listening and understanding
This comprises the study of three set works and a self selected study and leads to a listening test and written examination.
Unit 2 Composing
Two compositions are prepared during the course
Unit 3 Performing
This comprises two parts, ensemble performing and the realisation of one of the compositions submitted for Unit 2. Both are assessed internally.
A2 Units

Unit 5 Project, Report and Composition
The project is based upon two pieces of music, both self selected. A Report is based upon this Project and a Composition is produced as a result of the findings of the Project.
Unit 6 Performing
This comprises a solo recital which is assessed externally
Pupils who decide to study Music at AS/A2 should have passed GCSE with at least a Grade B or have passed Associated Board Grade VI Practical examination.
Careers
'A' level music is important to those who are looking to musical careers in, for example, Performing, Teaching or Sound Technology. However, it can be combined effectively with any number of subjects. It makes an ideal choice for the musician who intends studying for a different course but who wishes to broaden his or her musical experience.
